The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to urgently clear blocked waterways and sewage systems in Abuja to curb flooding and associated health risks.

The House also called on the FCTA to implement a comprehensive sewage evacuation and drainage maintenance plan, while engaging environmental and urban planning experts to develop long-term solutions to prevent recurring blockages.

The resolutions followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Onuh Blessing, who expressed concern over the increasing cases of clogged drains and poor sewage management across the Federal Capital Territory.
Presenting the motion, the lawmaker noted that the poor state of drainage infrastructure has resulted in persistent flooding along major roads, including Shehu Shagari Way, LaSalle Junction, and Alvan Ikoku Way at Ministers Hill, as well as in several communities across the six Area Councils.
She warned that stagnant water caused by blocked channels emits foul odours and poses serious environmental and public health risks, increasing the likelihood of waterborne diseases and reducing residents’ quality of life.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House mandated its Committees on Federal Capital Territory and Legislative Compliance to monitor implementation and ensure compliance with the directives.
