INEC’s deadline extension earns SDP’s praise, boosts parties’ preparations.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for extending the deadline for the upload of Presidential and National Assembly candidates by an additional three days.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, the SDP expressed appreciation to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), describing the decision as a demonstration of understanding, responsiveness, and commitment to ensuring an inclusive and transparent electoral process.
According to the statement, the exercise, which was initially scheduled to end on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has now been extended to Tuesday, July 14, 2026, following the intervention of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). The party noted that the extension would provide political parties with additional time to complete the upload of their candidates and resolve outstanding administrative issues, especially as the first three days of the exercise, which began on June 26, were reportedly lost due to circumstances beyond their control.
The SDP also praised the leadership of IPAC, led by Hon. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, for its constructive engagement and advocacy on behalf of all registered political parties. It said the successful intervention highlighted the value of dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect among key stakeholders in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The party expressed confidence that the collaboration between INEC and IPAC would strengthen institutional trust, deepen cooperation among democratic actors, and further consolidate Nigeria’s democracy. It congratulated both organisations for what it described as a commendable display of leadership and commitment to democratic values, while praying for continued wisdom and strength for their leaders in serving the nation.
