Adewole Assumes Duty As Nigeria’s High Commissioner To Canada, Vows To Deepen Bilateral Ties

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, Emeritus Professor Isaac Adewole, has formally assumed his diplomatic assignment in Canada, pledging to strengthen bilateral cooperation and build on the longstanding relationship between both countries.
Adewole commenced his diplomatic mission after presenting his Letters of Credence to Canada’s Governor-General, the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, in Ottawa on September 15, 2026.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ceremony marked the formal beginning of Adewole’s diplomatic engagements in Canada.
During a subsequent audience with Arbour, the High Commissioner expressed appreciation to the Canadian government for accepting his nomination and conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s greetings, felicitations and best wishes to the Governor-General on her assumption of office as Canada’s 31st Governor-General.
Adewole highlighted the longstanding cordial relations between Nigeria and Canada and expressed the Federal Government’s readiness to work closely with Canadian authorities to expand mutually beneficial cooperation.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s role in promoting democracy, good governance and counter-terrorism in Africa, particularly through its engagement with the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union in tackling regional security and development challenges.
Responding, Arbour described Letters of Credence as an instrument of trust between states and stressed the importance of rules-based interstate cooperation in advancing national interests and shared values.
The Governor-General also raised concerns about the impact of conflicts, climate change and global competition for technological innovation, calling for conditions that would promote peace, prosperity and improved quality of life.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ceremony reinforced the importance of sustained Nigeria-Canada engagement founded on mutual respect and shared interests, supported by longstanding people-to-people and institutional ties.
Adewole has pledged to use his tenure to expand bilateral cooperation and further consolidate relations between Nigeria and Canada, while the Federal Government expressed its commitment to continued engagement with Ottawa on peace, development, democratic governance and mutually beneficial international partnerships.
