Teachers’ Day: ASUSS Demands Better Welfare, Working Conditions
The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, has called for concrete government policies to improve teachers’ welfare, remuneration and working conditions.
The National President of ASUSS, Comrade Olusola Adigun, made the call in Abuja during activities marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, themed, “Standing with Teachers: Sixty Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Skills and Shaping Our Future.”
Comrade Adigun renewed the union’s demand for a special salary structure for teachers, as well as the provision of modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities and other basic learning infrastructure.
Also speaking, the President of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, urged Nigerians to reconnect with at least one teacher who taught them in primary or secondary school as a way of appreciating their contributions to society.
On his part, the Chairman of ASUSS, FCT Chapter, Comrade Julius Ogundiran, said although efforts are being made to improve teachers’ welfare, more needs to be done to address the shortage of teachers, promotion arrears and housing challenges.
Other stakeholders at the forum, including the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, pledged stronger government support for teachers, building a strong education system and securing the nation’s future.
