From Dooshima Terkura, Makurdi
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has commended the House of Representatives for passing a bill aimed at paving the way for the establishment of state police.
He described the passage of the bill as a bold and commendable move towards strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.
Governor Alia made the remarks during his Democracy Day broadcast to the people of Benue State on Thursday.
Explaining his support for the proposed legislation, the governor said the bill acknowledges the need for a more localized and responsive policing system capable of tackling the unique security challenges confronting various states and communities across the country.
According to him, the lawmakers deserve praise for showing courage, foresight, and dedication to safeguarding lives and property.
“I urge Nigerians to see this development in good faith and as a necessary reform designed to improve public safety and strengthen security at the grassroots level.
“With proper safeguards, accountability measures, and constitutional checks, state police can work alongside existing security agencies, enhance intelligence gathering, and ensure quicker responses to security threats.
“This represents a significant milestone in our collective pursuit of a safer and more secure Nigeria,” he stated.
Governor Alia also noted that his administration has made genuine efforts to improve security across the state through collaboration with security agencies, the provision of more than 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, as well as the establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and the Anyam Nyor Joint Task Force.
He added that these initiatives have contributed to improved security and supported the gradual restoration of peace in several parts of the state.
