Amupitan, Top INEC Officials Observe South Korean Elections in 2027 Preparations

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, is currently leading a high-level delegation to South Korea to observe ongoing local government elections, as Nigeria steps up preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The delegation’s mission is part of INEC’s international engagement strategy aimed at strengthening electoral administration and adopting global best practices ahead of the next national polls.
According to INEC’s Daily Bulletin released on Saturday, Prof. Amupitan is accompanied by National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu; Chief Technical Adviser to the Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia; and Director of Training, Dr. Binta Kasim Mohammed.
The team is participating in the International Election Observation Programme (IEOP), organised by South Korea’s National Election Commission (NEC) alongside the country’s Nationwide Simultaneous Local Elections running from May 29 to June 5, 2026.
The programme opened in Seoul and brought together election management bodies, international observers, and electoral experts from different countries to share experiences on democratic governance and election administration.
As part of the observation activities, the INEC delegation visited a polling centre in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, where they observed early voting procedures and examined the operational framework of South Korea’s electoral system.
INEC stated that the exposure is expected to deepen the commission’s understanding of modern election technologies, voter management systems, and international standards for credible elections.
South Korea, widely regarded as one of Asia’s most efficient and technologically advanced democracies, is known for its transparent electoral processes and high voter participation rates, making it a key reference point for election management bodies worldwide.
The commission added that lessons drawn from the study tour would contribute to ongoing reforms and capacity building efforts within Nigeria’s electoral system as the country moves closer to 2027.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity, improving electoral integrity, and ensuring that future elections reflect global best practices while meeting domestic democratic expectations.
