Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has secured the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a second term after emerging unopposed during the party’s primary election held in Minna.

The affirmation exercise took place at the APC Secretariat in the Niger State capital, where party members from the state’s 277 wards unanimously endorsed Bago as the sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Chairman of the APC Primary Election Committee, Danladi Mohammed, said the committee was mandated by the party’s national leadership to oversee the governorship primary in Niger State and subsequently affirmed Governor Bago through a consensus arrangement.

The motion for Bago’s adoption as the APC consensus candidate was moved by Senator Mohammed Musa and seconded by Deputy Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Afiniki Dauda, who represents Gurara constituency.

Party delegates and stakeholders at the event endorsed the governor through a voice affirmation after he was declared to have met all constitutional requirements of the party.

The APC also confirmed candidates for the state assembly elections across the 25 local government areas of the state.

According to the committee, while candidates in four councils emerged through direct primaries, those in the remaining 23 councils were selected through consensus.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Bago expressed appreciation to the people of Niger State and members of the APC for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to continue delivering democratic dividends and advancing development across the state if re elected.

According to the governor, the affirmation reflects the strong bond between him, the people, and the ruling party.

“The affirmation says a lot and shows the bond between me and the people. It also reflects the love for the party, and we will not take it for granted,” Bago said.

The governor, popularly referred to by supporters as “Farmer Governor” because of his administration’s emphasis on agriculture and food production, said his government would remain focused on improving the welfare of residents and expanding development initiatives across the state.
