Jesutega Onokpasa, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and prominent legal practitioner, has died. He passed away on Monday, with the news of his death made public on Tuesday by APC supporter Okezie Atani via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
Onokpasa was widely known for his outspoken support of President Bola Tinubu and for his frequent appearances on national television, where he staunchly defended the APC-led administration.
He served as a member of the APC Publicity Committee and was also part of the APC Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 general elections.Tributes have poured in from the APC community and beyond. A Facebook page affiliated with the party, Renewed Hope United Kingdom, described his death as “a profound loss to the Nigerian political and legal landscape,” hailing his dedication to political discourse and commitment to his beliefs.
However, in a surprising turn of events shortly before his death, Onokpasa publicly criticized the Tinubu administration, stating in a televised interview that the President had “failed woefully” and risked becoming a one-term leader. He also lamented the economic hardship in the country, accusing the government of inflicting “hunger in inestimable measures” on Nigerians.
Reactions on social media following his death have been mixed, with some Nigerians expressing sympathy, while others offered sharp commentary on his political turnaround.
A user on X, @Princeujay, wrote:
“Jesutega Onokpasa once defended Tinubu with his heart, liver, and lungs. Today, even his kidneys have surrendered. He admits Tinubu’s government has dished out hunger so bad, he’s now just a malnourished monument to his own loyalty.”
Another user, @foanor, posted:
“The economic crunch has dealt a severe blow to this clown… They thought they all would be free from the consequences of its metastatic spread.”
Olusegun Bakare (@theboyisgreat) added:
“He actually came clean at the end since he knew only the truth could set him free. RIP to Onokpasa. It’s very important to note that Mr Onokpasa made it clear on Arise TV that Tinubu he has always supported is a fraud and is incompetent.”
As of press time, official statements from the APC leadership or the Presidency are yet to be released.
