Yusuf Tuggar Set to Resign Today, Join Bauchi Governorship Race
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign today to formally enter the race for the governorship of Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.
President Bola Tinubu had directed all ministers and political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down by March 31, 2026, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable for party primaries set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tuggar’s resignation aligns with this directive and positions him to immediately campaign in his home state.
Political observers note that many cabinet members have hesitated to resign due to the lack of a clear endorsement from the President and the APC’s adoption of consensus over delegates’ primaries.
Tuggar, however, appears ready to test his popularity on the ground without seeking prior endorsement.
Tuggar’s career spans legislative and diplomatic roles. He served in the House of Representatives for Gamawa Federal Constituency from 2007 to 2011, was Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany between 2017 and 2023, and has held the Foreign Affairs portfolio since 2023.
Analysts say his policy-driven and technocratic approach could appeal to voters seeking credible leadership.
Supporters within Bauchi and APC circles have expressed strong confidence in Tuggar’s gubernatorial bid, suggesting it could reshape the state’s political landscape.
As the resignation deadline approaches, attention is shifting to how other political appointees respond and the potential impact on governance continuity and political stability.
