As Nigeria emerges from the holiday season, the Senate is poised for renewed vigor and purpose. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu took to his Facebook account to express his sentiments on returning to plenary following the Christmas and New Year recess, reflecting on both the responsibilities and the somber moments that accompany public service.

In his post, Senator Kalu poignantly acknowledged the passing of his late colleague, Senator Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North, who died on December 31. The loss reverberated throughout the Senate, prompting a moment of reflection and respect for Akwashiki’s contributions to the nation. Kalu emphasized the importance of honoring those who have served, stating, “We honoured his dedicated service to the nation and offered prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul, now that he has been laid to rest.” This gesture of solidarity highlights the camaraderie among senators, reminding the public that behind political titles, there exists a shared humanity.

As the plenary session commenced, the Senate delved into critical matters that affect the nation at large. One of the key agendas was the report presented by Senator Simon Bako Lalong, Chairman of the Committee on Electoral Matters, concerning the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 903). This legislative effort is part of a broader initiative aimed at fortifying Nigeria’s democratic framework, a task that Kalu is keenly invested in. He reinforced the notion that a robust electoral process is fundamental to Nigeria’s growth, emphasizing that “strengthening Nigeria’s democratic and electoral framework is essential for the future of our great nation.”

The senator further welcomed the transmission of 24 health sector bills by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, designed to bolster governance structures across health institutions. “By addressing over-bloated board memberships, the proposed reforms are poised to improve effectiveness across teaching hospitals, tertiary and specialty institutions, and regulatory agencies,” Kalu noted, emphasizing the importance of reform in enhancing healthcare accessibility for all Nigerians.
