As political consultations ahead of the next electoral cycle continue to gain momentum, Professor Festus Uwakhemen Asikhia, who is expected to emerge as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senate seat, has presented himself as a contender determined to bring private-sector efficiency, academic excellence and governance expertise into public service.

The respected entrepreneur, scholar and governance specialist recently held strategic consultations with the leadership of the Zenith Labour Party in Abuja, a move widely regarded as a major step towards securing the party’s senatorial ticket for the FCT.
Political observers view the development as the emergence of a candidate whose credentials extend beyond conventional politics. His supporters maintain that his background in business, education, healthcare administration and leadership development provides a combination of skills needed to tackle the challenges confronting residents of the nation’s capital.
Addressing journalists after meeting with party leaders, Asikhia stated that the Federal Capital Territory requires representation focused on practical solutions rather than political rhetoric.
“The FCT is one of the most important territories in Nigeria. It should be a model of development, innovation and effective governance. Unfortunately, many communities still struggle with challenges relating to infrastructure, housing, unemployment, healthcare and economic opportunities,” he said.
He stressed that public office should be occupied by individuals who possess not only the willingness to serve but also the capacity to achieve measurable results.
“Leadership is ultimately about results. It is about identifying problems, creating solutions and ensuring that citizens feel the impact of government policies in their daily lives. That is the philosophy that has guided me throughout my professional career,” he added.
Asikhia’s professional journey has been largely defined by entrepreneurship. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Festrut Group, he leads a diversified conglomerate with interests in real estate, construction, healthcare, logistics, transportation, consulting and education.
Over the years, the organisation has implemented projects that have generated employment opportunities and contributed significantly to economic activities across several sectors.
His supporters argue that his experience managing large enterprises has equipped him with the strategic vision and administrative discipline necessary for legislative responsibilities.
“Running successful organisations teaches accountability, resource management and long-term planning. Those are the same qualities needed in governance,” Asikhia noted.
In addition to his business accomplishments, Asikhia has established a strong academic reputation that has earned him recognition both nationally and internationally.
A Professor of Governance and Leadership, he has pursued studies in sociology, business administration, law, health management and psychology. His academic career has taken him through notable institutions in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States.
He currently occupies leadership positions within higher education institutions and contributes actively to research and policy discussions on governance, leadership and national development.
Despite his achievements, Asikhia maintains that leadership must always be measured by service to the people.
“The purpose of knowledge is impact. The purpose of leadership is service. Every experience I have gained over the years has reinforced my belief that governance must be centred on improving lives,” he said.
He identified youth unemployment, housing shortages, economic empowerment and infrastructure development as critical areas requiring urgent legislative intervention in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, Abuja’s rapidly growing population demands innovative solutions capable of delivering sustainable growth while ensuring that development benefits both urban centres and satellite communities.
“We must build an economy that creates opportunities for young people. We must strengthen access to quality healthcare and education. We must address housing challenges and support infrastructure that improves productivity and quality of life,” he stated.
Asikhia also emphasised the importance of stronger partnerships between government institutions and the private sector, arguing that sustainable development can only be achieved through effective collaboration.
As the Zenith Labour Party continues consultations on its electoral strategy, political stakeholders are closely monitoring Asikhia’s next steps.
For many observers, his potential emergence as the party’s senatorial candidate reflects a growing shift in voter expectations, with greater emphasis being placed on competence, experience and proven achievements rather than traditional political credentials.
As the political landscape gradually unfolds, Asikhia insists that his ambition is driven by a commitment to nation-building and unlocking the full potential of the Federal Capital Territory.
“The FCT deserves representation that is proactive, visionary and accountable. If given the opportunity to serve, my commitment will be to translate experience into impact and ideas into tangible results for the people,” he said.
For his supporters, that pledge encapsulates the appeal of a candidate seeking to convert years of boardroom success into meaningful legislative service.
