Breaking: Newswatch Magazine Co-Founder Yakubu Mohammed Passes Away at 75

Another co-founder of Newswatch magazine, Alhaji Yakubu Mohammed, has died.

Mohammed was reported to have battled illness for some time before his passing.

He was 75 years old.
His death comes barely two months after the demise of another co-founder of the magazine, Chief Dan Agbese, who died on November 17, 2025.
Several sources, as quoted by The Eagle Online, confirmed the development.
It was also gathered that Mohammed recently launched his memoir titled “Beyond Expectations” on November 4, 2025. As of the time of filing this report, an official statement from the family was yet to be released.
Born on April 4, 1950, Mohammed held a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree and hailed from Ologba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
His educational journey took him through St. Joseph’s Primary School, Ayangba, Kogi State (1964); Government Secondary School, Okene (1965–1969); University of Lagos (1972–1975); and Glasgow College of Technology, Scotland, United Kingdom (1978–1979).
Mohammed’s journalism career spanned several decades. He worked as Associate Editor at New Nigerian Newspapers (1976–1980), Managing Editor of New Nigerian Newspapers (January–December 1980), Deputy Editor of National Concord (1980–1982), and Editor of National Concord (1982–1984).
He later became Co-founder and Executive Editor of Newswatch Magazine (1984–1986), Managing Editor of Newswatch (1986–1994), and subsequently Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Newswatch Communications Limited from 1994.
Beyond journalism, Mohammed served as a Director of Yadara Nigeria Limited and Lastop Limited. He was also a member of professional bodies including the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Commonwealth Journalists’ Association (CJA), and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE).
In the education sector, he served as Pro-Chancellor/Chancellor of the Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State.
Mohammed’s personal interests included playing tennis, dancing, listening to music, and watching movies.
