A vigilante group in the eastern part of Boki Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State has apprehended more than 60 foreign nationals within the forest reserve.

A source who disclosed the development to City Post on Sunday, September 14, 2025, revealed that the foreigners were intercepted in Butatong Forest, allegedly wandering around suspiciously.

The source further explained that the situation has become complicated since the foreigners neither speak nor understand English, making communication difficult. Their inability to express themselves has left locals uncertain about their mission in the area.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Journalists Forum (CROSSJOF), Abuja branch, has commended the Boki LGA Chairperson, Hon. Beatrice Etta Nyiam, for her commitment to tackling the menace of illicit drug abuse in the council.

In a statement jointly signed by the CROSSJOF Chairperson, Mrs. Francisca Ogar, and the Secretary, Mr. Raphael Ekpang, the forum praised Hon. Nyiam’s efforts, noting her recent sensitization and peace meeting at Katchuan Irruan where she urged community leaders to report cases of drug abuse to law enforcement authorities.

Hon. Nyiam reiterated her administration’s resolve to sustain aggressive campaigns, partner with communities, and strengthen the fight against crime and drug abuse as long-term solutions to the menace. She also charged security agencies and traditional rulers to remain vigilant, stressing that those luring youths into drug use must face the full weight of the law regardless of age or gender.

CROSSJOF described her stand as bold and exemplary, aimed at building a drug-free Boki society.

“We sincerely commend Hon. Beatrice Etta Nyiam for this courageous step to combat drug abuse in the council. Drug abuse has ruined many of our youths, and the only way to tackle this scourge is to confront it head-on,” the statement read.

The forum further called on council and community leaders across the state to intensify awareness on the dangers of drug use while encouraging communities to partner with security agencies in creating a safer environment.

It also stressed the need for continuous educational and employment opportunities for young people, while urging parents to play stronger roles in guiding their children and instilling in them a sense of patriotism, responsibility, and usefulness to society.
