A commentator on good governance and civic affairs in Benue State, Dr. Tavershima Iorkase Mongol, has called for balanced political engagement in Tiv land to promote equity, fairness, and justice.

Speaking during a paper presentation titled “Politics in Tiv Land: Between Blind Loyalty and Destructive Opposition,” Dr.
Iorkase Mongol emphasized the need for political leaders and citizens in Tiv land to embrace accountability and constructive engagement in order to achieve good governance in Benue State.
According to him, the existing cycle of blind loyalty and destructive opposition is weakening development and democratic values, stressing that politics should serve as a vehicle for development, justice, and collective progress.
He noted that the prevailing political climate in Tiv land often replaces dialogue with sycophancy and hostility.
“One of the most disturbing trends is the brazen denial of opportunities and rights by some elected leaders, while many citizens remain silent out of fear or political dependence,” he stated.
Dr. Mongol further explained that when citizens are reduced to sycophants seeking approval to remain politically relevant, democratic values become weakened and leaders begin to see themselves as untouchable.
He added that sincere criticism is often wrongly interpreted as opposition, creating an atmosphere where communities are expected to support leadership unconditionally, even in situations of neglect.
He also warned that opposition driven by envy and political grievances is harmful because it discourages sincere efforts and promotes bitterness.
“This unhealthy cycle of blind loyalty on one side and destructive criticism on the other is counterproductive. It deepens division, weakens trust, and slows the pace of development,” he said.
Dr. Mongol therefore called for a shift toward balanced and mature political engagement, advising citizens to commend leaders where necessary while courageously pointing out areas that require improvement.
He also urged political leaders to cultivate humility and openness to correction.
“Tiv land deserves a political culture built on accountability, fairness, and genuine concern for development. Politics should not be reduced to a battle of insults, intimidation, and blind allegiance. It should be a platform where leaders and citizens work together honestly for the progress of the people,” he explained.
He maintained that only through constructive dialogue, responsible leadership, and objective criticism can Tiv land achieve the unity and development its people deserve.
Describing destructive opposition as one of the major factors undermining development, Dr. Iorkase Mongol reiterated that politics should function as a tool for growth, justice, and collective progress.
He stressed the need for political office holders in the state to accept genuine criticism and remain committed to programmes and policies capable of harnessing the potentials in Benue State for overall development.
Dr. Iorkase Mongol also advised the people of the state to avoid sycophancy and emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue in promoting good leadership, unity, and development in Tiv land.
