The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed concern over recent political developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, calling on the international community to exercise restraint and adhere strictly to the principles of international law.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the regional bloc said it was closely monitoring the unfolding situation in Venezuela and emphasised the need to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“ECOWAS has followed with concern recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” the statement read, noting that while states have the right to combat international crimes, such actions must remain within the bounds of international law.

The organisation acknowledged the right of states to confront transnational crimes such as terrorism and drug trafficking, but warned that such efforts should not undermine the sovereignty of other nations.

ECOWAS further reminded the international community of its obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as provided under international law, particularly Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter.

Aligning its position with that of the African Union, the bloc said it fully supports the AU’s statement issued on January 3, 2026, which called for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the Venezuelan people.

Reaffirming its solidarity with Venezuela, ECOWAS said it stands with the country’s citizens at what it described as a critical moment in their national history.

“ECOWAS reiterates its solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all states to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Venezuela,” the statement added.

The bloc also expressed confidence in the ability of Venezuelans to determine their own future through peaceful and inclusive processes, stressing its broader commitment to dialogue, respect for international norms and the right of peoples to self-determination.
