Expert Calls for Boost in Organic Fertilizer, Moringa Production Amid Global Supply Crisis

Dr. Ashimashiga Michael Akoloaga, Founder and Chairman of Eden Moringa Productions and Marketers Limited, has called on the Federal Government to promote the production of organic fertilizer and moringa across Nigeria.

He made the appeal on Saturday in Nyanya, Abuja, during the official commissioning of Moringa House.

According to him, many Nigerian farmers are currently facing serious challenges in accessing chemical fertilizers due to disruptions caused by the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.

Akoloaga noted that the crisis has significantly affected global fertilizer production and supply, largely due to interruptions in shipping activities through the Strait of Hormuz.
As of April 2026, the situation has effectively blocked the vital maritime route, halting the movement of essential fertilizer materials and nutrients. This disruption has led to sharp increases in prices, especially for nitrogen-based fertilizers.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) had earlier warned that the conflict is worsening the economic outlook for sub-Saharan Africa, as prices of oil, gas, fertilizers, and shipping costs continue to rise.

The IMF also projected that a 20 percent rise in global food prices could push more than 20 million people in the region into moderate or severe food insecurity.

Against this background, Akoloaga cautioned that Nigeria’s food production could suffer significantly if urgent steps are not taken to encourage local production of organic fertilizers.
He stressed that Dangote Refineries alone cannot meet the fertilizer demands of farmers nationwide.

The moringa advocate also criticized what he described as unfavourable government policies affecting private businesses, urging authorities to create a more supportive environment that would enable enterprises to grow, generate employment, and address insecurity.

He emphasized the economic and health benefits of moringa, stating that meaningful investment in the crop and its value chain is essential for tackling poverty, unemployment, and health challenges in Nigeria.Akoloaga further argued that certain ailments cannot be effectively treated with conventional medicine alone, adding that herbal remedies like moringa offer alternative solutions.
In his remarks, Professor Samuel Eduviere, Founder and Chairman of Segom International, urged the government to collaborate with Eden Moringa Productions and Marketers Limited while also fostering a business-friendly climate to drive national development.
Eduviere appealed to President Bola Tinubu to partner with the Eden Moringa Group in creating job opportunities, particularly for youths and women, while improving public health and economic well-being.
Also speaking, Dr. Ignatius Onah, a pharmacist, encouraged both the government and citizens to embrace natural herbal products, including moringa.
Onah highlighted the effectiveness of herbal medicine and advocated what he described as “defensive nutrition,” noting that poor dietary habits contribute significantly to health issues. He also pointed out perceived limitations in conventional medical approaches.
