The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to embark on extensive voter education and sensitisation ahead of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Election slated for 21 February 2026.

Speaking in Abuja during an implementation meeting with stakeholders, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Aminu Idris, said that providing citizens with adequate information on electoral processes would help tackle issues such as voter apathy and void votes.

Mallam Idris, who was represented by the FCT Administrative Secretary, Bimbo Oladunjoye, noted that voter education activities would be conducted across all six Area Councils, adding that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) would also be fully included to ensure inclusivity.

He stated that some of the sensitisation messages would focus on provisions available to support PWDs and their independent associations, while other citizens would be enlightened on their rights, responsibilities, and the benefits of participating in the electoral process.

In her remarks, the Deputy Director in charge of Civic, Values and Democracy at the FCT National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mrs Theresa Eze, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting INEC in sensitising the electorate so they can make informed decisions and take ownership of the process.

Also speaking, INEC’s Director of Gender and Inclusivity, Mrs Dorothy Bello, said the objective of the meeting was to ensure that all officials involved in the 2026 election clearly understood their roles in delivering credible polls.
