FEC Approves New Cancer Centre in Ibadan, Power Projects for Universities, and Multi-Trillion Naira Infrastructure Upgrades

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the establishment of an additional oncology centre at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, as part of a broader effort to enhance cancer treatment capacity and strengthen federal health institutions across the country.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, during a media briefing in Abuja following the Council meeting. He explained that the new oncology centre will help manage the increasing burden of cancer cases in Nigeria. He further revealed that similar centres are being planned for Zaria, Lagos, and Jos to expand access to specialised care.

In a related development, the Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, announced that FEC has approved a contract to provide renewable electricity to select federal universities and teaching hospitals. The institutions include the University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Ibadan (including UCH), Federal University in Jigawa, and another in Taraba State.

According to Adelabu, the project will be funded through the World Bank and the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund and is expected to be operational within nine months.

Also speaking, the Minister of Works, Mr. David Umahi, revealed that FEC has approved massive infrastructure projects nationwide. These include the construction of dual carriageways in Kebbi and Sokoto States valued at over ₦2 trillion, the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway worth ₦1.65 trillion, and the rehabilitation of key roads in Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Ekiti, and Ebonyi States.

Furthermore, the aviation sector received over ₦900 billion in approvals for major upgrades. These include the complete overhaul of the old terminal at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the expansion of Terminal 2, enhancements in security infrastructure, apron expansion, and the installation of advanced landing systems in Lagos, Kano, and Abuja airports.
