Ghana detains 141 Nigerians over alleged cybercrime activities
At least 141 Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Ghana over their alleged involvement in cyber-enabled financial crimes, including mobile money fraud and business email compromise schemes.
The arrests were carried out during a coordinated early-morning operation led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service.
In a statement released on Saturday, Ghana’s Commissioner for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel George, disclosed that the operation took place across major locations in Tabora and Lashibi.
According to the statement, 100 suspects were apprehended in Tabora, while 41 others were arrested in Lashibi, bringing the total number of suspects to 141.
Preliminary investigations suggest that all those arrested are Nigerian nationals.
Security agencies also recovered 38 laptops and about 150 mobile phones, which are believed to have been used in carrying out the suspected cyber-related financial crimes.
