GOCOP 2026: INEC Chairman Amupitan Set to Address Credibility of 2027 Elections
“Elections Are Not A One-Day Affair” — GOCOP Says Credibility Will Be Won Or Lost Before Ballots Are Cast
ABUJA — With four months to Nigeria’s next general election, the man in charge of the ballot will face the media.
Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, will deliver the keynote address at the 10th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
The announcement was made Monday by GOCOP’s 2026 Conference Planning Committee Chairman and Deputy President, Mr. Olumide Iyanda, in a statement signed by Publicity Secretary, Ms. Kemi Yesufu.
WHY THIS MATTERS NOW
The theme of the conference is: “2027 Elections: Trust, Transparency and Shared Responsibilities.”
GOCOP said the theme is deliberate as Nigeria’s 2027 elections are already shaping up as a stress test for institutions, politics and information.
With defections, early campaigns and deep public scepticism about past elections, GOCOP said the conversation can no longer be limited to “election day logistics” alone.
“The 2027 elections will be about more than what INEC does on election day,” Iyanda said.
According to him, “The credibility of the process will depend on the conduct of institutions, political parties and candidates, the media, civil society and the electorate. That is why we chose a theme that speaks to trust, transparency and shared responsibilities.”
Amupitan’s selection, GOCOP argued, places the electoral institution at the centre of that conversation.
THE MAN WITH THE BALLOT
Amupitan assumed office as INEC Chairman in October 2025. He is a Professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, with decades of experience in academia and university governance.
His areas of expertise include evidence law, corporate governance, company law, privatisation law and electoral jurisprudence.
Before his appointment to INEC, he served as Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Jos.
GOCOP said the combination of his experience as a scholar, administrator and lawyer informed his selection.
“Professor Amupitan has the responsibility of leading the institution that will manage the elections, but he also comes to that responsibility with a strong background in law, governance and institutional administration,” Iyanda noted.
He added: “We expect his keynote address to provide important insight into the preparations for 2027, the challenges ahead and what other stakeholders must do to support a credible process.”
BEYOND INEC: WHO OWNS 2027?
The conference will examine responsibility across the electoral value chain, including institutions, political parties and candidates, the media, civil society and voters.
For institutions, the conference will consider whether INEC, security agencies and the judiciary can resist pressure.
Political parties and candidates will also come under scrutiny over whether they will play by the rules or weaponise money, misinformation and incumbency.
The media will equally be examined. With 127 of Nigeria’s leading online publishers expected at the conference, GOCOP said it is putting its own house on the table by focusing on accuracy, fairness and resistance to manipulation as campaigns intensify.
Civil society and voters will also be considered, particularly in areas such as voter education and election-day vigilance.
Panels will further discuss public confidence, access to credible information and transparency — the soft infrastructure that determines whether election results are accepted or rejected.
A PRECEDENT, A PROVOCATION
GOCOP has held a similar engagement before. In 2022, ahead of the last general election, then-INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, delivered the keynote address titled: “2023 Elections: Managing the Process for Credible Outcome.”
This year, the baton passes to Amupitan, with GOCOP noting that the stakes appear higher as trust in elections remains fragile, fake news spreads faster and the digital space has become a major battlefield for narratives.
To chair the 10th edition, GOCOP has selected constitutional lawyer and former NBA President, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN.
Agbakoba has spent decades at the intersection of law, human rights and governance reform.
Iyanda said his record makes him “a good fit to chair a conference examining trust, institutions and shared responsibility in the democratic process.”
THE GUILD BEHIND THE MIC
GOCOP is Nigeria’s premier body of corporate online publishers, comprising 127 digital media entrepreneurs operating some of the country’s most visited news platforms.
Its mandate includes professional standards, business sustainability and credibility in digital journalism at a time when more Nigerians get their news online than anywhere else.
“The conference will also provide an opportunity for online publishers to examine the responsibility of the media in providing accurate, fair and credible information as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 elections,” Iyanda said.
In short, no hiding place — not for INEC, not for politicians and not for the press.
The 10th GOCOP Annual Conference will hold on October 8, 2026, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, 38-40 Isaac John Street, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
