Gov. Sule Approves N13bn for One-Kilometre Road Projects Across Nasarawa LGAs — Official
By David Odama
The Nasarawa State Government has approved the sum of N13 billion for the construction of one kilometre of road in each of the state’s 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aminu Muazu-Maifata, disclosed this on Monday in Lafia during a ministerial briefing organised by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Ibrahim Tanko, as part of efforts to enable government officials highlight achievements of the present administration.
Muazu-Maifata stressed that Governor Abdullahi Sule had granted full autonomy to the LGAs, noting that the state government only put in place a coordinating framework to ensure prudent management and effective utilisation of local government funds.
According to him, the framework meets monthly to review the needs of each LGA in line with their statutory allocations and other revenues, after which releases are agreed upon to meet identified demands.
“It was during one of our meetings that we resolved that each area council should construct one kilometre of road, and N13 billion was consequently approved for the execution of the projects.
“From our savings, we have so far released 30 per cent of the approved sum to the chairmen. Construction work has commenced and is currently at various stages of completion.
“We are closely monitoring the projects, and very soon another tranche of funds will be released to enable the councils to continue the works for the benefit of the people at the grassroots,” he said.
The commissioner added that the road projects were among several initiatives being undertaken by the local government chairmen across different sectors, either completed or ongoing, to complement the efforts of the governor without resorting to borrowing.
Drawing inspiration from Governor Sule’s philosophy of saving for the future, Muazu-Maifata revealed that over N4 billion had been saved collectively by the 13 LGAs.
He further explained that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Sule, had no reservations about the push for full financial and administrative autonomy for local governments.
He assured that the administration would continue to support and champion initiatives aimed at strengthening financial and administrative independence of LGAs nationwide, in order to drive development at the grassroots level.
Muazu-Maifata also disclosed that with the support of the governor, the area councils had been paying 100 per cent of workers’ salaries and had fully implemented promotions for civil servants.
He noted that local government workers were equally benefiting from a 50 per cent salary bonus, similar to their counterparts at the state level.
In addition, he said the state government had approved the monthly release of N80 million to the State Pension Bureau for the payment of gratuities to retirees from the 13 LGAs.
“We are also paying pensions at 100 per cent monthly to ensure retirees live comfortably and enjoy the rewards of their years of dedicated and meritorious service to the state,” he added.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Ibrahim Tanko, said his ministry had created several platforms, including the ministerial briefing series, to inform, educate and enlighten the public on the policies, programmes and projects of the current administration.
Tanko assured that the enlightenment campaign would be sustained, including visits to project sites, to allow citizens see firsthand the various projects being executed across the state.
He further disclosed that additional projects had been captured in the 2026 budget — described as the largest in the state’s history — to consolidate ongoing development efforts, complete existing projects and prevent abandonment.
The commissioner also urged members of the public, particularly communities benefiting from government-provided schools and other facilities, to take ownership of such projects and protect them from criminals, vandals and saboteurs.
