An 18-year-old teenager, Tega Emajuwa, has been arraigned alongside two accomplices for the alleged murder of his 12-year-old cousin, Emiliano Egwunbare, in what police described as a ritual killing.
Emajuwa, together with Edugie Destiny (20) and Osayande Vincent (23), reportedly kidnapped Emiliano at Obagie Community in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.
Sources revealed that Emajuwa had lived with the parents of the deceased for a few months before executing the heinous act on September 16, 2025. He allegedly collected ransom from Emiliano’s parents but failed to release the boy. The teenager was later tracked down and arrested by police operatives.
According to police sources, Emajuwa confessed to the crime a week after his arrest, leading to the apprehension of his accomplices. The suspects subsequently took the police to a well where they dumped Emiliano’s body, from which some vital organs had reportedly been removed.
The Deputy Spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident but debunked reports that the suspects had been released.
She explained that the case was first reported at Ogida Police Division before being transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Unit in Benin for a discreet investigation.
According to her, “Following sustained tactical and technical intelligence, operatives of the unit arrested three suspects — Tega Emajuwa (18), Edugie Destiny (20), and Osayande Vincent (23) — who all made confessional statements linking them to the crime. Sadly, during the investigation, the victim’s body was later discovered inside a well in Obagie Community. The remains were evacuated and deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) mortuary for autopsy.”
ASP Ikoedem also addressed a viral video in which the victim’s mother claimed the suspects had been released, describing the allegation as “false, misleading, and unfounded.”
“The suspects remained in lawful custody until they were charged to court on October 16, 2025, where the case is currently ongoing. They have all been remanded for prosecution, and the mother of the deceased was present in court during the proceedings,” she added.
