The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has raised concerns over a growing trust gap between the commission and the Nigerian public, urging the media to support efforts to rebuild confidence in the electoral process.

He made the call on Wednesday in Abuja while hosting members of the INEC Press Corps Executive Committee during a courtesy visit the first formal interaction with the group since he assumed office in late 2025.

Amupitan acknowledged persistent public skepticism surrounding elections in Nigeria and emphasized the need for a stronger alliance with the media to effectively communicate electoral reforms and procedures.

According to him, transparency must go hand-in-hand with clear and consistent communication to gain public trust.
The Chairman of the Press Corps, Segun Ojumu, in his remarks, described Nigeria’s elections as highly complex operations requiring collaboration among key stakeholders, particularly the media.

He also commended Amupitan for his openness and approach to leadership.
Other members of the delegation included Assistant Secretary John Onah and Welfare Director Chux Ukwuatu.

The engagement comes as INEC intensifies preparations for upcoming elections under the Electoral Act 2026. The commission has slated the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will follow on February 6, 2027.

Prior to the general elections, off-cycle governorship polls will be conducted in Ekiti State on June 20, 2026, and Osun State on August 8, 2026, serving as critical indicators of the commission’s readiness.

Amupitan, who succeeded Mahmood Yakubu, reaffirmed his commitment to delivering credible, inclusive, and transparent elections as the country prepares for a crucial electoral cycle.
