NASC Chairman Meets PASAN Leadership on Staff Welfare, Operational Reforms
The leadership of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) and the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), NASC Chapter, have held a strategic meeting to strengthen cooperation in advancing the Commission’s constitutional mandate.
This was contained in a statement by Emmanuel Anyigor Deputy Director, Information/Spokesperson of the Commission and made available to journalists in Abuja
The engagement, convened by the NASC Executive Chairman, Chief Saviour Enyiekere, provided an opportunity for frank discussions on staff welfare and operational reforms within the Commission.
In his remarks, Dr. Enyiekere appreciated the contributions of PASAN’s leadership, describing the staff as the backbone of the National Assembly’s operations. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to improving welfare, announcing plans to relocate to a permanent office within the National Assembly Complex by the end of October to end years of working from rented premises.
He further outlined efforts to enhance staff capacity through training, improved transportation, and affordable housing schemes aimed at boosting productivity and morale.
The meeting also addressed key concerns raised by PASAN, including training opportunities, transportation, housing, and the issue of alleged political interference in the Commission’s administration. Dr. Enyiekere emphasized the need to align job roles with qualifications and called on PASAN to support efforts to tackle undue political influence in recruitment.
He urged staff to uphold discipline by observing the official 4:00 PM closing time and promoting a culture of accountability and diligence. He also called for gender inclusivity in PASAN’s leadership, encouraging the election of more women into executive positions.
On health and security, the Executive Chairman stressed the importance of expanding the clinic to better serve staff while urging vigilance against information leaks. He reiterated that the Commission remains the “engine room” of the National Assembly and emphasized unity and collective responsibility in driving its mandate.
In his response, the Chairman of PASAN (NASC Chapter), Comrade Shuibu Baba Mohammed, commended Dr. Enyiekere’s pledge to expand the Commission’s structure by creating new directorates and departments to ease stagnation and improve efficiency.
He also presented the union’s demands, which include enhanced welfare, promotion of long-stagnated Deputy Directors, settlement of outstanding benefits under the Conditions of Service, improved training, better end-of-year bonuses, and elimination of political interference in administrative processes.
The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to repositioning the National Assembly Service Commission as a more efficient and staff-focused institution. Both parties expressed optimism about deepened collaboration to achieve these goals.
Honourable Commissioners, including Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi and Hon. Patrick Giwa, also contributed to the deliberations.
