By Iyojo Ameh
The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), in partnership with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), has launched an entrepreneurship training programme for female journalists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The initiative, which kicked off on Monday, September 22, is set to train 60 participants in two cohorts, equipping them with practical entrepreneurial skills, mentorship, and access to business development services.
Speaking at the inauguration, NAWOJ National Chairperson, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, described the programme as a “long-awaited opportunity” to help women journalists achieve financial independence.
“My hope is that participants will benefit immensely, not only to secure something to fall back on after active practice but also to sharpen their reporting on economic growth and SMEs,” she said.
FCT NUJ Chairperson, Comrade Grace Ike, lauded the initiative as timely, noting that many female journalists earn meagre salaries. She urged partners to provide starter packs to enable participants to put their skills into practice.
NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, assured that members would maximize the opportunity and encouraged participants to learn, unlearn, and relearn to succeed in business.
From SMEDAN, Mrs. Olabimpe Fawale, Head of Women & Youth Division, emphasized that the programme was part of a strategic intervention to empower women journalists with tools and mentorship to thrive as entrepreneurs.
Supported by ICSS and CAPSTONE, the training combines physical and online sessions, mentorship, and professional development services. It will run through November 2025, covering key areas of entrepreneurship aimed at boosting the financial resilience of women journalists.
