NIDCOM Congratulates Nigerian-American, Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe, on Promotion to Commodore in U.S. Navy
By David Odama
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Capt. Kelechi Ndukwe, a Nigerian-American officer, on his promotion to Commodore, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60, and Commander, Task Force (CTF) 65 of the United States Navy, headquartered in Rota, Spain.
NIDCOM also commended the United States government for recognizing excellence and productivity, noting that such values have earned Ndukwe the prestigious rank within the U.S. Navy.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by its Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Gabriel Odu, the Commission described the promotion as both a remarkable personal achievement for Commodore Ndukwe and a source of pride for Nigeria.
“The international naval community and Nigerians in the diaspora are proud of his new position. He will be leading U.S. Navy destroyer operations in Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, showcasing his exceptional service record, professionalism, and leadership in advancing global maritime security and collaboration,” the statement read.
Capt. Ndukwe had earlier made history in April 2021 as the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97).
His promotion, the Commission noted, reflects the resilience, discipline, and excellence that mark his journey from being the son of Nigerian immigrants to becoming one of the highest-ranking officers in the U.S. Navy.
Reiterating its commitment to celebrating and supporting Nigerians in the diaspora, NIDCOM emphasized that Ndukwe’s achievement symbolizes the positive impact of Nigerians abroad and the limitless potential they bring to the global stage.
“The Commission once again extends its warm congratulations to Commodore Kelechi Ndukwe on this outstanding accomplishment,” the statement concluded.
