Nigeria, AU Deepen Talks On Credible 2027 Elections

The Federal Government and the African Union (AU) have intensified consultations on preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with both sides reaffirming the need for a credible, peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, stated this when he received the AU Pre-Election and Needs Assessment Mission, led by former Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen Hassen, in Abuja.
The seven day mission is assessing Nigeria’s electoral preparedness and engaging key stakeholders, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), government institutions and civil society organisations.
Hassen said the mission was part of the AU’s efforts to support democratic processes across member states, stressing the importance of inclusion, transparency and fairness in elections.
He also requested the ministry’s support for further engagements with relevant Nigerian stakeholders.
Enikanolaiye assured the delegation of the Federal Government’s cooperation with INEC, political parties, civil society groups, security agencies and development partners throughout the assessment.
He said the government expected the consultations to produce useful recommendations, while reaffirming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
The minister also urged the mission to maintain a balanced and objective assessment of Nigeria’s electoral preparations.
