In a first-of-its-kind event, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) hosted a high-profile debate at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Agodi, Ibadan, centered on the theme: “Poverty is Not an Excuse for Crime.

The debate was led by Assistant Controller of Corrections, Adekunbi Sunday Abiodun, Officer In-Charge of the Centre, who welcomed inmates, dignitaries, and visitors to the landmark discussion.

He said the debate is intended to challenge assumptions, encourage reflection, and foster critical thinking among inmates.

“This topic resonates deeply within our walls, where we witness the consequences of choices every day,” Abiodun stated. “Our mission is rehabilitation and reformation, equipping individuals with skills and support to reintegrate into society as positive contributors.”

He further noted that events like this reflect a shared commitment to safer and more compassionate communities, emphasizing the importance of empathy, confidence, and thoughtful decision-making for inmates.

The Assistant Controller also acknowledged three dedicated Corps members who have made significant contributions to inmate education and rehabilitation, describing their service as commendable and historical.

In recognition of excellence, the Gender Desk Officer at the state headquarters awarded a financial gift to the best speaker of the debate, encouraging active participation and engagement among attendees.
