NiMet Sets Up Innovation Committee to Drive Digital Transformation and Research Reforms
By Iyojo Ameh
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken a significant step toward institutional reform with the formal inauguration of its Service Innovation Committee at its headquarters in Abuja.
The committee is tasked with driving research, promoting innovation, and advancing digital transformation across the agency as part of broader efforts to enhance efficiency and modernize public service delivery.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s public service reform agenda and directives from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, which encourage innovation-driven governance across ministries, departments, and agencies.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, described innovation as a central pillar of his administration’s reform strategy.
He noted that in a scientific institution such as NiMet, innovation goes beyond idea generation to include the practical transformation of research outputs into solutions that improve forecasting, climate services, and operational efficiency.
According to him, several reforms have already been introduced under his leadership, including the modernization of operational systems, improved weather and climate service delivery, strengthened stakeholder engagement, enhanced staff capacity development, expanded partnerships, and the integration of digital technologies into core operations.
“These initiatives have strengthened our institutional performance and created an environment that encourages creativity and continuous improvement,” he said.
Professor Anosike explained that the newly inaugurated committee will serve as a strategic platform to identify and promote climate-smart innovations, support research and development, and provide evidence-based recommendations to management.
The committee will also monitor the implementation of innovation initiatives and advise leadership on emerging technological and operational trends relevant to the agency’s mandate.
He emphasized that the creation of the committee reflects NiMet’s commitment to embedding innovation within its institutional culture while positioning the agency to respond more effectively to environmental, technological, and stakeholder-driven challenges.
With the establishment of the Service Innovation Committee, NiMet is expected to further strengthen its role as a leading scientific institution, leveraging research and digital tools to deliver more accurate, reliable, and impactful meteorological services in support of national development.
