Okura State: As The Journey Begins

The Movement for the Creation of Okura State has reached a significant milestone with the successful presentation of its memoranda to the Senate and House of Representatives Adhoc Committees on Constitutional Amendments. These presentations, made respectively in Jos and Minna, mark the formal entry of the Okura State agenda into the national discourse on restructuring Nigeria’s federation. This achievement is a product of years of dedication, consultation, and unwavering commitment from stakeholders across the proposed state’s communities.

At the heart of this movement is the vision to restore a sense of justice, equity, and balanced development for the people of the old Igala Division and other contiguous communities. The restoration of the 14 Local Government Areas earlier created by the Kogi State House of Assembly remains central to this vision, as it holds the promise of bringing governance closer to the grassroots and enabling more effective delivery of democratic dividends.

While these initial steps are commendable, it is crucial to recognize that the journey towards the actual creation of Okura State has only just begun. Constitutional amendments in Nigeria are highly rigorous, involving multi-layered procedures, consultations, and approvals by federal and state legislative bodies as well as the endorsement of the President. Each phase demands sustained advocacy, documentation, and demonstration of broad-based consensus among the people.

It is therefore appropriate to specially commend the untiring efforts and commitment of the leaders of the Movement who have continued to give direction and impetus to this cause. In particular, the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District, Jibrin Isa Echocho, and the Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Ali Halims, deserve recognition for standing up to be counted at this defining moment. Their leadership has inspired confidence and unity among the proponents of Okura State.

This process also requires massive mobilization of resources to fund critical activities such as public enlightenment campaigns, stakeholder engagements, and extensive media visibility. Educating citizens on the objectives, benefits, and implications of state creation is essential for building informed support and countering misinformation. The movement must therefore prioritize strategic communication that resonates with both grassroots and elite audiences.

Equally important is the need to consolidate alliances with political leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and youth groups across the proposed Okura State. Their endorsement and participation in advocacy efforts will lend credibility to the cause and demonstrate the genuine aspirations of the people. These partnerships will also serve as channels for feedback and inclusion, which are indispensable for sustaining momentum.

Fundraising has become an immediate priority, as no meaningful progress can be made without adequate funding. Contributions from individuals, professional groups, businesses, and community associations will enable the movement to produce educational materials, organize town hall meetings, and engage reputable media platforms. Transparent management of these resources will further strengthen public trust and participation.

The evolving national conversation around devolution of powers and equitable development presents a unique opportunity for the Okura State Movement to position its proposals within the broader context of constitutional reform. This requires crafting persuasive arguments that align with Nigeria’s quest for stability, efficiency, and unity through the restructuring of its federating units.

As the process unfolds, it is important for all supporters to remain patient, vigilant, and resolute. Constitutional amendments are neither quick nor straightforward, and setbacks are inevitable. However, with collective determination, strategic leadership, and sustained advocacy, the realization of Okura State is achievable.

In the weeks ahead, the Movement will roll out comprehensive sensitization programs to keep the public informed and involved. This will include media engagements, stakeholder consultations, and community outreach initiatives aimed at reinforcing the legitimacy and urgency of the demand. This is where all the subcommittees are expected to reenergise and get to work.
Together, through sacrifice, solidarity, and strategic action, the aspiration for Okura State can be transformed from a dream into a lasting legacy for current and future generations.
