In a major step toward boosting food production and supporting rural livelihoods, Senator Babangida Hussaini, who represents Jigawa Northwest Senatorial District, has distributed 12,000 bags of 50kg fertilizer to farmers in his constituency at no cost. The intervention comes as part of efforts to support this year’s rainy season farming and promote food security.

The distribution was officially launched at Sule-Tankarkar, headquarters of Sule-Tankarkar Local Government Area, where Senator Hussaini emphasized that the gesture was aimed at empowering farmers to improve crop yields.

“We decided to intervene with fertilizer support because it remains a vital input in modern agriculture, especially during the rainy season,” the Senator stated.

He reaffirmed his commitment to working with federal agencies to ensure fertilizers and other essential farm inputs are accessible and affordable to farmers, in order to increase agricultural productivity and enhance food security.

According to him, each of the 12 local governments in his constituency will receive one truckload of fertilizer, while eight additional truckloads have been earmarked for organized farmers’ associations.

“For the polling units, we are focusing on members of our political party, the APC, while the additional eight trucks will be distributed through structured farmers’ associations to further strengthen their capacity,” Senator Hussaini explained.

To manage the distribution, the fertilizers were officially handed over to the Local Government Council Chairmen, who will lead the distribution committees in their areas.

Additionally, to ease transportation, Senator Hussaini provided ₦500,000 to each local government to support the movement of fertilizers from the council headquarters to various farmer collection points.

He called on the farmers to make the most of the opportunity and urged the local distribution committees to uphold fairness and transparency throughout the exercise.

At the event, Professor Abdullahi I. Shehu Ma’aji, Managing Director of the Northwest Development Commission, praised the initiative, saying it aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes food security, poverty reduction, and job creation.

Professor Ma’aji pledged the Commission’s continued support for projects that foster the social and economic growth of the Northwest region.

Speaking on behalf of the 12 local government chairmen, Hon. Tasiu Adamu, Chairman of Sule-Tankarkar Local Government, thanked Senator Hussaini and promised a fair and accountable distribution process.

“We will ensure that the fertilizers reach the rightful beneficiaries—our farmers and party members—so that the intended impact is fully achieved,” Hon. Tasiu assured.
