Tinubu Appoints Oyedepo as New Director of Public Prosecutions
By Iyojo Ameh
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Mr. Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice, following his transfer of service from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the Federal Civil Service.
The appointment, confirmed in a letter dated December 23 and signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, was made “in the public interest,” according to the official communication.
Oyedepo, a senior advocate and respected financial crimes prosecutor, will replace the outgoing DPP, Mr. Abubakar Babadoko, who is set to retire on December 31, 2025, after reaching the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director.
A graduate of the University of Ilorin (2007) and the Nigerian Law School (2008), Oyedepo brings over 15 years of experience at the EFCC, where he led high-profile prosecutions and served as Head of the Monitoring Unit. He is expected to strengthen the government’s legal strategy, reduce dependence on external counsel, and improve coherence in federal prosecution efforts.
Oyedepo was part of the Federal Government’s legal team in the internationally renowned Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) case and is widely regarded for his expertise in managing complex economic and financial crime litigations. His work earned him recognition as the EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and the Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019.
