The wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, on Wednesday empowered 250 Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in Nasarawa State with N50 million under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during the disbursement ceremony in Lafia, the First Lady stated that each beneficiary would receive N200,000. She was represented by the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Hauwa Jugbo, who noted that the funds demonstrated the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of PWDs.
According to her, the support serves as a business recapitalisation grant intended to help PWDs start small businesses, expand existing ventures, and enhance their sources of livelihood.
She explained that similar empowerment programmes had been extended to all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association.
“Each state of the federation, the FCT, and the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association was given N50 million, amounting to N1.9 billion,” she said.
Oluremi Tinubu added that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to foster inclusive growth and ensure that no Nigerian is left behind.
She recalled that in the past two years, she had supported more than 100,000 women petty traders and small-scale business owners, including PWDs, with direct financial grants to help grow their businesses.
She further announced that the Governing Board of RHI had resolved to make the economic empowerment programme for PWDs an annual event, to be held every December 3 in commemoration of the International Day of Persons With Disabilities.
At the launch of the grant disbursement, Silifat Sule, wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, expressed appreciation to the First Lady for her continuous support to the people of the state over the last two years.
She noted that beneficiaries were carefully chosen from all 13 Local Government Areas to ensure the gesture reached every part of Nasarawa State. She urged the recipients to use the funds to improve their lives and the wellbeing of their families.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Salah Barde, Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Disability Rights Commission, expressed gratitude to both the First Lady and the Governor’s wife. He assured that the commission would ensure the beneficiaries made judicious use of the funds to promote their personal and family development rather than spending it on unproductive ventures.
