Xi Arrives In Washington As Trump Rolls Out Rare Airport Welcome For Chinese Leader
Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the United States for a state visit, receiving an unusually high-profile welcome from President Donald Trump at Joint Base Andrews as Washington and Beijing seek to manage a relationship shaped by trade, technology and strategic tensions.
Xi arrived at the Maryland military facility on Wednesday, September 23, accompanied by his wife, Peng Liyuan. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump personally received the Chinese president and Peng at the foot of the aircraft in a rare planeside welcome.
The arrival featured a formal military ceremony, including an honour guard, red carpet, gun salute and the playing of the national anthems of China and the United States. American children also presented flowers to Xi and Peng.
The White House had earlier confirmed that Trump would greet Xi at Joint Base Andrews before hosting a full State Arrival Ceremony at the White House on Thursday.
The White House said the formal ceremony would involve 479 military personnel representing all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. It will include the presentation of the two countries’ flags, performances by military units and the national anthems of China and the United States.
The ceremony is also scheduled to include a military review and a flyover featuring a B-2 Spirit and four F-22 Raptors, underscoring the ceremonial significance Washington has attached to Xi’s visit.
Xi’s visit marks his first trip to Washington in more than a decade and comes at a critical point in relations between the world’s two largest economies.
The two leaders are expected to discuss a range of issues, including trade, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and broader questions surrounding strategic stability between China and the United States.
The visit also comes as both countries work to maintain a fragile economic détente and address outstanding trade disputes.
According to the White House, Thursday’s programme will include the formal arrival ceremony, meetings between the two presidents and a state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump for Xi and Peng.
The symbolism of Xi’s arrival was particularly notable because U.S. presidents do not routinely travel to Joint Base Andrews to personally receive visiting heads of state.
The planeside welcome therefore sets an unusually warm tone for a visit taking place against the backdrop of persistent disagreements between Washington and Beijing.
Beyond the ceremonial welcome, the focus will now shift to whether the talks can produce greater stability in the economic and strategic relationship.
For China and the United States, the immediate challenge is to manage areas of competition while maintaining channels for dialogue on issues with consequences extending well beyond their bilateral relationship.
Xi’s Washington visit is expected to last three days, with the Chinese leader and Peng scheduled for further engagements before their departure.
