The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, is now the only aspirant for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket following the close of nominations.

The party officially ended the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidential election on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

According to party sources, Obi was the sole aspirant who purchased the forms before the deadline expired.
However, the NDC extended the deadline for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Assembly positions until midnight on May 24, 2026.
The party stated that there would be no further extension for the presidential nomination process.
Screening of aspirants who submitted forms is scheduled to take place from May 19 to May 26, 2026.
During the same period, cleared aspirants are expected to collect and return their nomination forms.
Obi recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC.
With no other contender in the presidential race, he is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus candidate, subject to successful screening and clearance.
NDC National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, said the screening exercise would consider “the wishes of the electorate, local peculiarities, capacity and competence, as well as character.”
The party also reaffirmed its affirmative action policy aimed at supporting women, youths and persons living with disabilities.
Obi is still expected to appear before the screening committee, which will sit between May 19 and May 26.
The extension granted for other elective positions is expected to test the party’s ability to build a nationwide structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi’s move to the NDC follows earlier discussions surrounding opposition coalition efforts ahead of the polls.
Political observers say responses from other parties and blocs could shape the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest.
