By Ugbede James
The Benue State Governor Rev. Hyacinth Alia has appointed renowned music icon, Innocent Ujah Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, as the state’s Technical Adviser on Entertainment and Community Outreach, in a move that blends celebrity influence with governance.
The appointment was announced during a government event in Makurdi on Wednesday, with a video of the moment going viral across social media platforms. The announcement was met with loud applause from members of the governor’s cabinet and supporters in attendance.
Governor Alia, while presenting the new appointment, praised 2Baba’s contributions to the entertainment industry and his longstanding commitment to community development, particularly in his home state of Benue.
“You have contributed a lot to various areas, not just within Benue, but far beyond,” the governor said. “Once you say 2Baba, people start dancing—even without a song,” he added with a smile, referencing the singer’s nationwide appeal and cultural impact.
The governor emphasized that the appointment is not merely symbolic. “On behalf of the Benue State Government, we want to give you some more responsibilities, in addition to the ones you have been doing, because you have the capacity to help us chart the way forward,” he stated.
This move is seen as part of Governor Alia’s broader agenda to leverage creative industries and grassroots engagement to foster socio-economic development in Benue. A Catholic priest-turned-politician, Alia has been vocal about involving youths and the private sector in rebuilding and repositioning the state since assuming office in 2023.
2Baba is expected to play a critical role in promoting local talent, driving cultural tourism, and advancing social outreach programs across the state.
His acceptance of the role was met with enthusiasm from fans and community stakeholders, who see the appointment as a bridge between governance and youth empowerment.
Further details on his official duties and upcoming projects under his new portfolio are expected in the coming weeks.
