The University of Jos community was plunged into grief on Thursday following the death of eight students who were reportedly heading to a welcome party when they lost their lives in a fatal road accident.

The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday along the Jos–Zaria Road and involved a Sharon bus and an articulated truck. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the bus had 11 occupants, all identified as students of the University of Jos.

Public Education Officer, Superintendent Route Commander Peter Y. Longsan, said in a statement issued in Jos that seven victims died at the scene, while an eighth passed away in the hospital.

He added that three other students were receiving treatment at a hospital in the state capital.

The statement read: “Today, 11th December 2025, FRSC Plateau State Sector Command received a distress call at about 0230 hours reporting a road traffic crash that occurred opposite Unity Bank, Zaria Road, Jos.

“The crash involved two vehicles—a trailer and a bus. Eleven people were onboard the bus, and they were said to be students of the University of Jos.

“Upon arrival, seven victims were found unresponsive and were later confirmed dead by a medical doctor. Another victim died in the hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to eight. All victims were males. Three others are currently receiving treatment.”

An eyewitness reported that the bus was speeding and attempted an unsafe overtaking maneuver, which resulted in loss of control and the eventual collision.

The FRSC added that an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olajide E. Mogaji, urged motorists—especially drivers—to avoid night journeys, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence, and driving while fatigued, noting that these factors significantly contribute to fatal crashes.

“The government needs you alive and wants you to enjoy this festive season and beyond,” Mogaji said. He also encouraged the public to contact the FRSC toll-free number 122 to report road accidents or emergencies.
