Chelsea have confirmed the sudden departure of head coach Enzo Maresca, with the club currently placed fifth in the Premier League.

The 45-year-old Italian leaves Stamford Bridge less than six months after guiding the Blues to victory at the Club World Cup, capping an impressive first season in charge.

In a statement, Chelsea said:
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track.
Chelsea’s recent form has been poor, with just one win in their last seven league matches. The Blues managed only six points from six games in December, leaving them 15 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal.
However, results were only part of the issue.
Despite having a contract that ran until 2029, Maresca had earlier impressed key figures at the club, including sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, as well as co-owner Behdad Eghbali, after leading Chelsea to a top-four finish and winning both the UEFA Conference League and the Club World Cup last season.
Tensions, however, gradually emerged between the manager and the club’s hierarchy. Maresca surprised even members of his own coaching staff following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton — their only league win in December — when he publicly described the period as the “worst 48 hours” of his time at the club.
Those remarks reportedly came without prior notice to senior club officials, who would have preferred internal matters to remain private. Behind the scenes, strains had already been developing.
Maresca had sought to expand his profile following Chelsea’s recent successes, including plans to publish a book, which were blocked by the club. He also spoke at Italy’s Il Festival dello Sport, organised by La Gazzetta dello Sport, without receiving permission from Chelsea.
He further made public his disagreement with the club’s decision not to sign a central defender after Levi Colwill suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season. The club argued that such a move could prompt academy prospect Josh Acheampong to seek a transfer, leading Maresca to eventually back down.
The former Leicester City manager also changed representation, switching from the Wasserman agency to Jorge Mendes, and was linked with a potential future role as successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, claims he dismissed.
In recent weeks, Maresca was also noted for no longer wearing club tracksuits, opting instead for personal attire.
After Chelsea’s final match under his tenure — a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on December 30 — assistant manager Willy Caballero explained Maresca’s absence from post-match media duties was due to illness. However, it is understood the manager was already considering his future.
Notably, a 52-second Chelsea social media video released on New Year’s Eve reviewing the club’s year contained no appearance from Maresca.
From Maresca’s perspective, he felt the pressure placed on him was excessive given what he considered difficult working conditions, and believed a line had been crossed regarding attempts to influence team selection. While accepting responsibility for managing a young squad, he felt expectations from supporters needed to be better managed, especially in light of key injuries to Colwill and Cole Palmer.
Chelsea had initially planned to review his position at the end of the season should results improve, but Maresca’s growing dissatisfaction contributed to the decision to part ways earlier.
What Next for Chelsea?
Chelsea are set to face Manchester City on Sunday without a confirmed manager, and it remains unclear who will oversee training ahead of the match.
Assistant manager Willy Caballero, who joined Chelsea from Leicester alongside Maresca in 2024 and has previously deputised during touchline bans, could be considered as a temporary option.
The club are long-time admirers of former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, currently under contract at Marseille. Chelsea also previously interviewed Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna and Tottenham boss Thomas Frank before appointing Maresca.
Other potential candidates expected to be considered include Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola. (BBC)
