A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo Hashim, has expressed confidence that the ongoing leadership crisis and litigations instituted by a faction of the party will soon be resolved.

Dr. Hashim made this known on Friday while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of his visit ahead of a religious convention in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The frontline opposition figure explained that intensive discussions are already underway involving the principal actors, with the aim of reaching an out-of-court settlement. According to him, this approach is intended to avert a prolonged legal battle that could ultimately reach the Supreme Court, a development he warned would not be in the best interest of the party.
“As the general election draws nearer, it is imperative for the PDP to resolve all internal disputes to ensure the progress of the party and to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy,” Olawepo stated.
Dr. Hashim, a founding member of the PDP, emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy can only thrive with strong, vibrant, and competitive opposition parties, stressing that the country cannot afford to slide into a one-party system.
Commenting on recent political developments, he attributed the wave of defections by some PDP governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to poor performance in their respective states and fear of anti-graft agencies.
He further noted that the 2027 general election would largely be a contest between the electorate and political parties, adding that Nigerians are now more enlightened about their rights and the power they wield during elections.
