NFSS Inaugurates Department Of Small Arms And Light Weapons As CG Charges Officers To Help Sustain National Security

The Nigeria Forest Security Service, NFSS, has inaugurated the Department of Small Arms and Light Weapons as well as that of Lioness Tactical Squad.

Speaking during the inauguration at the NFSS Headquarters in Abuja, the Commander General of NFSS, Dr Joshua Osatimehin said the move was to monitor the production, movement and assessment on small arms and light weapons across the nation’s forest corridors.

Dr. Joshua Osatimehin stated that there are lots of proliferation of small arms and light weapons across Nigeria’s forests and NFSS has its men in all the 36 States and 774 Local Government nationwide hence the need to establish and inaugurate such Department to monitor illegal production, illegal movement and illegal proliferation of the small arms and light weapons towards sustaining national security.

“We equally inaugurated the Leadership of Lioness Tactical Squad which are predominantly female squad of NFSS and this idea is strategic in other for us to include women in the security architecture of our country because they’re places we make arrest and the services of women are needed and we did that as a multi layer approach to gather intelligence at the grassroots especially within the forest corridors so that anywhere females are involved in security it will bring out public confidence and that is the idea and rationale behind the inauguration of the leadership of NFSS Lioness Tactical Squad” He explained.

In his words “Since the collapse of of Gaddafi’s Government, many arms have been e routed through the Sahel Africa and West Africa which Nigeria is inclusive and we believe that with the coming up of the establishment of the Department of small arms and light weapons, it will go a long way to prevent the proliferation of all these arms across the forested zones of Nigeria”.

Dr. Joshua Osatimehin therefore advised officers and men in the Department and the leadership of Lioness Tactical Squad to be more professional, more tactical and more discipline in the discharge of their duties.

“I advice you all to take Nigeria first in discharging your duties through patriotism rather than to be ordinary citizen and I charge all of you to wear NFSS uniform with honour and serve Nigeria with courage so that you all can be part of the heroes that Nigeria is looking for ” the CG NFSS added

In a goodwill message, Major Olusi from the Directorate of Military Intelligence, DMI commended the Commander General of NFSS, Dr Joshua Osatimehin for the laudable initiative of establishing a Department for Small Arms and Light Weapons towards combating security challenges resulting from small arms and light weapons in the country.

Major Olusi who highlighted the importance of NFSS in Nigeria’s security apparatus stressed the need for formal recognition of the Service towards safeguarding the country’s forested region.

Some of the officers and men of the Department of Small Arms and Light Weapons and the leadership of NFSS Lioness Tactical Squad promised not to betray the confidence reposed in them.

They also expressed their readiness to contribute their quota to the protection of lives and property of Nigerians through effective security across Nigeria’s zones.
