Ahead of the 2027 general election, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has adopted its 2023 presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, as the party’s sole presidential candidate for the forthcoming election.

The decision was taken during the party’s national convention held in Bauchi State, where delegates and party leaders gathered to deliberate on the future direction of the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The motion for Adebayo’s adoption was moved by the Chairman of SDP State Chairmen and Lagos State Chairman of the party, Femi Olaniyi Ferrari.

While addressing delegates at the convention, Ferrari described Adebayo as a committed party loyalist who had continued to project the ideals and vision of the SDP since the 2023 elections.

According to him, the party needed a candidate with experience, consistency and a clear understanding of SDP’s ideological direction as preparations intensify for the 2027 presidential race.

Ferrari said the adoption of Adebayo was aimed at providing stability within the party and enabling early mobilisation ahead of the elections.

He noted that the former presidential candidate had remained actively involved in party affairs and continued to champion issues relating to good governance, economic reform and national development.

Speaking shortly after his adoption, Adewale Adebayo expressed appreciation to party leaders and delegates for the confidence reposed in him.

He pledged to continue working with stakeholders across the country to build a stronger and more inclusive political platform capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.

Adebayo also called on members of the party to remain united and committed as the SDP prepares for the 2027 elections.

The convention ended with renewed calls for grassroots mobilisation, internal unity and stronger engagement with Nigerians as the party positions itself for the next presidential contest.
