Sallah Celebration: FRSC, NURTW Advocate Responsible Driving Across Highways
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has cautioned motorists against the use of worn-out and expired tyres as many people prepare to travel for the Eid El Kabir celebration.
The Corps Marshal gave the advice in Keffi, Nasarawa State, during the commencement of a six-day Sallah Special Patrol mega rally aimed at sensitizing road users on the need to drive responsibly during the festive period.
Represented by the Corps Public Education Officer, Ohaeri Osondu, the FRSC boss urged commercial drivers at Keffi Central Park to always ensure that their vehicles are in good condition and to avoid overloading, overspeeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed stated that the motor park rallies became necessary to ensure effective traffic control and curb the excesses of motorists on the highways.
The FRSC Corps Marshal also called on transport union executives to partner with the FRSC in restoring sanity on the nation’s roads.
According to him, the only way to complement the Federal Government’s huge investment in road rehabilitation and construction is to reduce road accidents to the barest minimum.
He noted that the sensitization campaign was being carried out in all major motor parks across the country to ensure the free flow of traffic during the celebration.
The Assistant Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Keffi branch, Usman Kalid, said all park leaders in Keffi, Garaku, and Akwanga held a congress last week to educate members on the need to obey traffic rules and regulations.
He maintained that stiffer penalties await members caught driving under the influence of hard drugs and engaging in other nefarious activities.
According to him, any member who fails to comply with the rules would not be allowed to load passengers in any NURTW park and could also face suspension for months.
He commended the FRSC for taking the campaign to the transport corridor, noting that it had enlightened drivers on the best ways to drive safely during festivities and beyond.
The sensitization rally was also taken to the Nasarawa State University gate, where the team educated motorcycle and tricycle riders on the need to obey traffic lights and avoid overloading.
