Schools Reopen as Niger Dismisses Kidnap Scare

The Niger State Government has dismissed reports alleging bandit kidnappings in some parts of the state, describing the viral claims as false, misleading, and the work of individuals determined to create panic and undermine ongoing security efforts.

The clarification came after widespread fear on Wednesday triggered the sudden closure of schools in Minna and other parts of the state capital.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Hon. Obed Nana, assured residents that there was “no cause for alarm,” stressing that Niger State remains safe, secure, and conducive for both educational and business activities.
He explained that the government was compelled to react following the circulation of false social media reports claiming that schools in Bosso, Kpakungu, Sabon-Wuse, Lambata, and nearby communities had been attacked.
According to him, a joint verification exercise conducted by the Ministry of Information and Orientation, the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Niger State Police Command, and other security agencies confirmed that no such incidents took place.
“The reported incidents did not occur,” the statement emphasized, noting that the claims were intentionally fabricated to spread fear and unnecessary anxiety among residents.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students, teachers, and school communities, adding that it continues to work closely with security agencies, school administrators, and community leaders to strengthen security around schools across the state.
Parents and guardians were encouraged to remain calm and continue sending their children to school, as adequate security measures have been put in place.
Meanwhile, normal academic activities resumed across Minna on Thursday, with all schools that had earlier shut down reopening for classes.
Security presence was also strengthened across the metropolis, with police patrol vehicles deployed to strategic locations. The Commissioner of Police further directed divisional officers to collaborate closely with school authorities to ensure continuous protection in and around educational institutions.
