Renewed Hope in Action: Tinubu Unveils N5 Road, Highlights Infrastructure Progress in Abuja
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the full-scope development of Arterial Road N5, Obafemi Awolowo Way, stretching from Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Dape District, Abuja.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Tinubu called on residents to fulfil their tax obligations in order to sustain the pace of development across the Federal Capital Territory. He assured Nigerians that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains committed to seeing projects through from conception to completion.
According to him, residents and business owners benefiting from ongoing infrastructure development should support government efforts by paying their taxes, land charges, and ground rents.
“To the residents and business owners enjoying this transformation, I urge you to meet your obligations. Pay your taxes. Clear your land fees and ground rents. Your compliance gives the FCT Administration the strength to build more roads like this one,” he said.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu recalled that the first phase of the project, covering the Gwarinpa I District section, was inaugurated in June 2025, with a promise that the remaining section would be completed.
He noted that the administration had fulfilled that promise by delivering the Dape District section within the stipulated timeframe.
The President described the road as more than a transportation project, saying it symbolises economic growth, improved connectivity, and the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians.
“Let us be clear about this: we did not inherit this section from decades past. We conceived it, we funded it, and we delivered it. It was awarded to Julius Berger with a strict 15-month deadline and flagged off in October 2024,” he stated.
Tinubu also commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for his dedication to infrastructure development, describing him as the “Engine of Execution” whose leadership has ensured timely project delivery.
Earlier in his remarks, Wike said the Renewed Hope Administration has extended the dividends of governance beyond the city centre to satellite towns and developing districts across the FCT.
He noted that communities previously neglected are now witnessing unprecedented investments in road infrastructure, public facilities, and urban development.
According to the minister, the completion of the N5 corridor forms part of a broader strategy aimed at opening up communities, improving mobility, stimulating economic activities, and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
Wike further disclosed that all property owners affected by the road construction were fully compensated, stressing that the FCT Administration remains committed to fairness and due process in implementing development projects.
“And I want to say clearly, we paid. So if you are saying that because you are from that place, and development has passed, and government did not dash you money, we don’t dash money when we are carrying out development. So if you say you have property and it was demolished, and you were not paid, come and say so. I challenge anybody. It’s not correct,” Wike said.
He added that the successful completion of the road demonstrates the administration’s determination to balance infrastructure expansion with the welfare of affected residents while delivering projects that promote economic growth and urban transformation.
In her remarks, the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as another major milestone in President Tinubu’s efforts to improve connectivity, boost economic activities, and create opportunities for residents across the territory.
Mahmoud also praised Wike for what she described as his purposeful leadership and unwavering commitment to transforming Abuja through the delivery of critical infrastructure.
She expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents of Life Camp, Dape, and neighbouring communities for their cooperation throughout the construction period, noting that their support contributed significantly to the successful completion of the project.
The newly commissioned Arterial Road N5 is expected to strengthen connectivity among Dape, Karmo, Gwarinpa, Kado, Idu, and Mbora, while also providing direct access to the Idu Industrial District.
Stakeholders believe the project will help reduce traffic congestion, lower transportation costs, attract investments, create employment opportunities, and further advance the Federal Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, and economically vibrant capital city.
