The Nigeria Inter-Tribal and Inter-Religion Alliance for Peace, Unity and Development has dismissed what it described as false and provocative allegations leveled against Major General Michael Enenche Onoja of the Nigerian Army.
According to the Alliance, a social media post circulating on platforms including Facebook, authored by Maria Ogbanna Eke, wrongly accused Major General Onoja of involvement in atrocities in Nigeria’s South-East. The Alliance clarified that General Onoja currently serves as the Defence Director of Media Operations, an administrative position under the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff.
Reacting to the claims, the Alliance’s National Publicity Secretary, Aaron Mike Odeh, said the allegations were “false, malicious, reckless, and unsupported by any verifiable evidence.” He added that the publication appeared intentionally designed to stir ethnic hostility, incite public unrest, and weaken national unity.
Odeh described the claims as more than blackmail, calling them a deliberate provocation and a threat to public peace and cohesion. He stated that the Alliance is demanding an immediate retraction of the allegations and a public apology by the author(s), to be published in three national newspapers.
Emphasising respect for due process, Odeh noted that Nigeria operates under the rule of law and not on unverified social media accusations or public trials. He warned that the Alliance would pursue legal action should the allegations not be withdrawn.
The Alliance further stressed that General Onoja’s office does not carry out arrests, military operations, or field deployments, describing the claims as misleading and potentially dangerous.
