BREAKING;Fresh Twist in PDP Crisis as Group Allegedly Moves to Position Jonathan for 2027 Presidency
Fresh political calculation has emerged in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential race following reports that former President Goodluck Jonathan has been adopted by loyalists within a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party linked to former minister Kabiru Turaki.
According to sources, a close associate of Jonathan from the South-South region allegedly obtained presidential nomination forms on his behalf under the Turaki-aligned PDP structure. If confirmed, the development could significantly reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move comes amid rising uncertainty in the PDP, following a series of court rulings that invalidated the controversial Ibadan national convention that produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee.
On April 30, 2026, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki faction and upheld earlier judgments nullifying the convention, ruling that it violated existing court orders.
The court’s decision further weakened the legitimacy of the Turaki-led leadership, even as the faction maintained that party structures would determine its next direction.
Before the Supreme Court ruling, both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court had restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising the Turaki-led executives, declaring the convention unlawful.
Despite these setbacks, insiders claim consultations have intensified within the faction in recent weeks to rally support around Jonathan as a potential consensus candidate capable of uniting divided opposition blocs.
Sources also allege that key stakeholders within the group have promised Jonathan full backing should he agree to return to active electoral politics.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has consistently remained silent on speculation about a possible return to the presidential race, even as political groups continue to push for his comeback.
Questions around his eligibility for another presidential term have also persisted, given constitutional debates surrounding his previous tenure and election cycle.
So far, neither Jonathan nor his official spokesperson has confirmed the reported development.
