Former President of the Senate and National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (GCFR), for his enduring legacy of peace, unity, and selfless service to Nigeria.

In a goodwill message celebrating General Gowon’s 91st birthday, Senator Mark commended the retired General for his unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and championing post-war reconciliation.

According to Senator Mark, “General Gowon’s life and legacy remain a shining example of humility in leadership, devotion to national unity, and steadfast faith in Nigeria’s destiny. As one of the nation’s foremost statesmen, his contributions to preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity, promoting reconciliation after the civil war, and advancing peace-building remain enduring pillars of our national history.”

He recalled that during his tenure as Head of State from 1966 to 1975, General Gowon guided the country through one of its most turbulent eras, upholding the philosophy of “No Victor, No Vanquished” after the civil war — a principle that continues to inspire unity, forgiveness, and national healing.

Senator Mark further observed that even in retirement, General Gowon has continued to promote peace, prayer, and patriotism through initiatives such as Nigeria Prays, demonstrating that true service to the nation transcends public office.

“His humility, integrity, and faith-driven leadership remain a moral compass for younger generations,” Mark stated.

On the occasion of his 91st birthday, Senator Mark expressed gratitude to Almighty God for blessing General Gowon with long life, sound health, and a steadfast spirit of service.

He described the former Head of State as “a father of the nation, a bridge-builder, and a true patriot,” while wishing him many more years of good health, peace, and divine grace.
