The Commander General of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), Dr. Usman Mohammed Jahun, has directed State Commanders and senior officers of the organization to intensify efforts in complementing the operations of formal security agencies in the fight against crime during the ember months and beyond.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Dr.
Jahun described the ember months as a period often associated with increased criminal activities, stressing the need for VGN to strengthen its strategies to curb insecurity during the festive season.Represented by the Assistant Commander General in charge of Operations, Philip Friday Amanyi, Dr. Jahun disclosed that the VGN is currently training its personnel nationwide on intelligence gathering and advanced security tactics aimed at safeguarding the lives and property of Nigerians, particularly at the grassroots.
According to him, the group recently apprehended several bandits across some Northern states and handed them over to the relevant authorities for prosecution.
Addressing leadership matters within the organization, Dr. Jahun reaffirmed his position as the substantive Commander General of VGN, citing a valid court ruling that confirmed his leadership.
He also congratulated the newly appointed Service Chiefs, commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointments, which he described as a welcome step toward tackling the nation’s security challenges.
Dr. Jahun expressed confidence in the capacity of the new Service Chiefs—General Olufemi Oluyede, Chief of Defence Staff; Major-General W. Shaibu, Chief of Army Staff; Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke, Chief of Air Staff; Rear Admiral I. Abbas, Chief of Naval Staff; and Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence—to deliver on their mandates.
He noted that the appointments would go a long way in reinforcing Nigeria’s security architecture and called on all stakeholders to support the new Service Chiefs in addressing the country’s prevailing security issues.
“What is needed now,” he said, “is collective support for the Service Chiefs to surmount the nation’s security challenges. The Vigilante Group of Nigeria will continue to assist all formal security agencies—including the Police, Military, Civil Defence, Immigration, Customs, NDLEA, and others—in achieving President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the effective protection of lives and property, especially at the grassroots.”
