Federal University Kashere Honours Orji Kalu for Outstanding National Service

The Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Gombe State, has conferred an honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc, Honoris Causa) on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to national development, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s unity.
Speaking at the conferment ceremony on Saturday, held at the university’s main campus in Kashere, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Umar A. Pate, described Senator Kalu as an exceptional figure whose impact cuts across Nigeria’s political and economic landscapes.

“Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a two-term Governor of Abia State and now a distinguished member of the National Assembly, has consistently demonstrated extraordinary leadership and dedication to humanity,” Professor Pate remarked. “From his achievements in business to his enduring influence in politics, he stands out as a worthy recipient of this prestigious honour.”
Professor Pate highlighted Kalu’s success as a leading media entrepreneur, noting how his ventures have shaped Nigeria’s media and communication sectors.
He also commended Kalu’s far-reaching philanthropic efforts, which have uplifted communities, fostered inclusiveness, and strengthened national cohesion.
“Our decision to honour Senator Kalu is based on merit and the tangible impact of his service, enterprise, generosity, and statesmanship,” he added, stressing that the Governing Council selected each honouree with utmost diligence.
The award was one of the key highlights of the university’s third combined convocation ceremony, which attracted dignitaries from across Nigeria. Professor Pate reiterated the institution’s commitment to celebrating excellence as a way to inspire students and young Nigerians.
“We seize opportunities like this to encourage our students to emulate exemplary citizens who embody hard work, innovation, and patriotism,” he said.
Senator Kalu joins other distinguished honourees, including Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare; Dr. Kole Shettima, Country Director of the MacArthur Foundation; Hon. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation; and the Chancellor of the university, Ambassador Dr. Lawrence Agbuzu.
Reflecting on the honour, Senator Kalu expressed deep gratitude;
“I am deeply honoured to receive this Doctor of Science (D.Sc, Honoris Causa) from the Federal University of Kashere. I sincerely thank the Senate and Governing Council for recognising my humble contributions to national development, entrepreneurship, leadership, and service. I congratulate my fellow awardees for this well-deserved honour.”
Senator Kalu also appreciated the warm reception accorded to him in Gombe State:
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, for his hospitality, and to my distinguished colleague, Senator Danjuma Goje, for his gracious presence at the ceremony. My visit to the Jewel of the Savannah has been truly memorable.”
Before the convocation, Senator Kalu paid a courtesy visit to Governor Yahaya at the Government House, where he was warmly received ahead of the ceremony at
the university’s campus.
