By Iyojo Ameh
President Bola Tinubu has signed into law a bill upgrading the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, to the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.
The development has been welcomed by the member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on House Services, Daniel Amos, who commended the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, for sponsoring and securing the passage of the legislation.

Amos, in a statement on Friday, described the development as a historic milestone in the advancement of technical and vocational education in Kaduna State and Nigeria.
He said Abbas demonstrated purposeful leadership by initiating and pursuing the bill despite his demanding responsibilities as presiding officer of the House.
“Speaker Tajudeen’s leadership on this bill demonstrates purposeful commitment to education and national development,” Amos said.

According to him, the new university will strengthen technical and vocational education, promote skills acquisition and contribute to national development.
Amos also expressed appreciation to Tinubu for granting presidential assent to the legislation, alongside the bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Yaba, Lagos.
Both bills were sponsored by Abbas as part of efforts to expand access to specialised higher education and strengthen technical capacity in the country.
The law repeals the legislation establishing the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, and provides a new legal framework for its transformation into a federal university focused on technology and vocational studies.
Amos said the presidential assent reflected the administration’s commitment to educational reform and human capital development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, on the institution’s elevation.
The law is expected to facilitate the expansion of degree programmes, strengthen research and innovation, improve access to federal funding and enhance graduates’ employment prospects.
Amos assured that the House of Representatives would continue to support efforts to ensure the smooth take-off of the new university and the realisation of its educational objectives.
